Pinetop-Lakeside is an incorporated community located in the scenic White Mountains of Arizona. Founded in the early 1880's, Lakeside was named as a result of the area's lakes and Pinetop from the nickname of a saloon keeper who served the Fort Apache soldiers. The two communities incorporated as one town in 1984. Pinetop-Lakeside, at an elevation of 7,200+ feet, is known for its extensive tourism and recreational activities. We are in the world's largest stand of Ponderosa Pines.

Where we are!

The town of Pinetop-Lakeside is located about 3 1/2 hours northeast of Phoenix and northeast of Tucson. From Phoenix you may take US 60 through Miami-Globe and the scenic Salt River canyon or state Hwy 260 through Payson and Heber. Both routes take approximately 3 1/2 hours and are roughly 185 miles.


 

Population

Within the town of Pinetop-Lakeside there are about 3,500 year round residents. In the county surrounding the town there are another 3,500 permanent residents. During the summer time, the population swells to about 25,000 to 30,000.


 

Economy

The economy of Pinetop-Lakeside is heavily oriented towards trade and services for tourists and recreation seekers, as well as residents. There are more than 50 natural fishing lakes or streams that surround the area and a wide variety of wildlife; including bear, deer, elk, javalena, coyotes, racoons, eagles, hawks and spotted owls. Perhaps one of the fastest growing areas of Arizona, Pinetop-Lakeside hosts many antique, unique gift and fashion shops. There are three major golf courses in the tall pines that you must see to believe. Tennis, hiking, snowmobiling and horseback riding are also Available.

Sunrise Ski Park, a winter sports complex, is located 30 miles east on the White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation. Hon Dah Casino is also a part of the reservation and is about 3 miles out of town.

The real estate market has been booming for the past few years, with values increasing 10-15% per year. The construction trades are very busy and building lots are becoming a valuable commodity. Local Resources

The Blue Ridge school system is comprised of four schools; elementary, middle, junior high and high school. Each school has its own buildings and facilities yet are all located at one central campus (White Mountain Blvd & Woodland Road). The '96-'97 school enrollment for all grades was over 2,300 students. Navapache Regional Medical Center is the hospital for Navajo and Apache counties. The hospital has over 60 beds, 95+ physicians on active status and a large number of consultants. The hospital can be reached at (800) 300-0361 or 537-4375 locally. Local services include clinics, family practice & specialty MD's and DO's, dentists and a wide range of health related specialties.
